Why is Montana so strict about metal detecting?

Montana is governed by federal laws and state/local laws. Each state and each area within each state has the right to put forth their own rules and regulations for metal detectorists. The main reason behind these laws is protect the natural areas from damage and to ensure that artifacts and historical items from the past are not disturbed, removed, or broken.

It does make it more difficult for metal detectorists, but everyone must follow all laws pertaining to the hobby. If we follow all the laws and regulations, even if they seem unfair and restrictive, we can avoid having more restrictions placed upon the hobby of metal detecting.

What is the best metal detector for gold prospecting in Montana?

There are many metal detector models that are fantastic for gold prospecting. Some are designed specifically for gold; others have a gold mode on them. One of my favorite gold prospecting metal detectors is the Fisher Gold Bug 2.

This detector is specifically for gold and operates at a whopping 71 kHz (for perspective, most detectors operate between 6 and 18 kHz). This means it is spectacular at finding small and fine gold. Other great gold prospecting models include the Garrett Goldmaster 24K, Minelab Gold Monster, and Garrett ATX.

What accessories do I need for metal detecting?

There are a few accessories that make metal detecting more enjoyable and easier. First is a finds pouch. This is a pouch designed to be worn, usually around the waist, where you store all the items you find. Next items are decent quality digging tools. This includes a full-sized shovel and a hand trowel.

You may also want to invest in a good handheld metal detecting pinpointer. These help you narrow down your search area, making the need for a larger hole unnecessary. Lastly, you will want to take along a sack for trash. You will inevitably find trash. Pack out any trash you find and leave the area better than you found it.

Do I need to use headphones when metal detecting?

Headphones have their merit for metal detectorists. Headphones can help you hear faint and jumpy signals. These are often overlooked without headphones because you cannot hear them clearly or at all. With headphones, you can better differentiate between the signals and decide whether they are worth digging or not.

However, there are certain areas where wearing headphones can be dangerous. For example, I metal detect in the forest most often. I do not use headphones while in the forest so I can hear my surroundings better. I can hear animals, people, water, and vehicles. It is important, with or without headphones, to remain aware of your surroundings.
